THE NEW POPE.

election Proceeding.

PICTURESQUE CEREMONY. SELECTION IN DOUBT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 5, 5.5 p.m. Rome, Feb. 3. The Enclosure of the Cardinals was a picturesque ceremony. Many ladies and Roman nobility, magnificently robed, and also representative Italian gnd Catholic diplomatists, assembled at Sala Regi, where the palatine guard and the noble guard were on duty. Thence they passed Pauline Chapel and watched the Cardinals’ procession to the Sistine Chapel, where a glimpse through the doorway showed that each Cardinal had a throne with voting slips on a desk in front. The Cardinals appeared to be mostly wearing violet mantles and red birettas. Headed by Cardinal Vannutelli, with Cardinal Logue following, was Cardinal Gasquet, in a black benedictine mantle, followed by two Dominican Cardinals. Other notable figures were Cardinals Boggialo, Merrydelval, Mercier and Kakowski, who, with great height, was another impressive personality. After intoning Veni Creator the procession of Cardinals left the Pauline Chapel and went to the Sistine Chapel. As they vanished the order exeunt omnes was given and all the spectators retired, leaving the Cardinals and their staffs to work on the election. The Cardinals will next be seen surrounding the new Pope. Meanwhile a huge crowd of tourists and others gathered in the square. The first papal ballot was resultless. A second column of black smfoke ascended at five o’clock and told ( the crowd that the second ballot had failed. A report says the second vote showed Cardinal Lafontine gaining ground.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Feb. 5, 11.5 p.m. Rome, Feb. 4. The third and fourth papal ballots were resultless.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
