MEN DOING THEIR WORST.
FATHER VAUGHAN’S CRITICISM. ‘ London. iNov. 20. Father Bernard Vaughan, speaking at Wimbledon, said:—At the present time people are “chucking” discipline. Men are trying to do their "worst instead of their best; in fact, if they belong to a trade union they are not allowed to do their best; they have to live dowi to somebody else’s worst. Although 1 hold with trade unions .for the great work they have done. I denounce their principle of working badly. Masters are not afraid to pay wages, but they want work in return. The workman in his individual capacity is a gentleman, hut in his organised capacity he is a teiror. for he is not himself; he is ia the hands of the paid agitator. They have no reason to be proud of themselves just now. I do not care where you go, whether it is to the scullerymaid right up to the employer, all are a great deal at fault. It is sad that articles should be charged at prohibitive prices, for people cannot pay for them with the high rents, rates and taxes. I d«> not think the present state of tilings can last much longer, although there is an underground swelling of revolution in the country. Now is the time to play 1 the game and to remember tint we are in a time when twice four no longer makes nine, but only eight, and that we are living in a day when it has to be realised that we must be content with less and make some adequate return for what we receive. The cry of discontent is heard in all quarters. 7he churches and the cradles are empty; only the divorce court and the cinemas 1 are full, and that is the reason why j we have got into our present state. The 1 picture show is not heaven; we are j made for something better, and I hone every one will he impressed with the fact that we have a proud destiny be- 1 fore us.
