An old resident of the Stratford district, Mr. Herbert William Hann, passed away on Wednesday at the residence of his son, Mr. S. G. F. Hann, of Bird Road, at the ripe age of 78, after residing in that locality for 42 years. Both his sons reside in the district.

An Aucklapd wire reports the death of,Monsignor G. N. Gillan, of St. Benedict’s, aged 63, after a long illness. Deceased arrived in New Zealand in 18S7, and ministered at Tauranga, Ponsonby. Parnell and St. Benedict’s, being 5 years at St. Benedict’s. Mr. Arthur H. R. Amess, M.A-., who has been appointed principal of the Stratford Technical School, is 35 years of age. keen on athletics, and has specialised in agricultural and dairy science. He was agricultural science master at the Wanganui College for six years, and is at present lecturer in science at the Auckland Training College. Miss Helen M. T&cey, of the Strathcona School, Canada, took up the position of fourth assistant at the West End School, New Plymouth, on Wednesday, under the scheme for the temporary exchange between New Zealand and Canadian teachers. Yesterday she was formally welcomed to the school, where she is to teach for the next twelve, months, by. Mr. J. S. S. Medley (chairman of the school committee). Mr. J. G. Craig, chairman of the Manaia Town Board, died early yesterday morning following an operation a few days ago for appendicitis. He was a public spirited and useful type of citizen who helped the town and district in many ways, and his rather sudden death will be deplored throughout South Taranaki. He was only 35 years of age, and leaves a widow and one child, his widow being the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gilmour, now of New Plymouth. On .Tuesday evening, Mt. 'E. C. Barleyman, who has retired from the position of secretary to the Kaupokonui Dairy Company, Ltd., was the recipient of a handsome presentation in the form of a travelling bag and rug, whilst Mrs. Barleyman was also presented with a set of fish and game carvers on behalf of the staff of the company. On making the presentation, Mr. W. McDonald, general manager to the company, paid a high tribute to Mr. Barleyman’s long service as the company’s secretary, eulogising his many good qualities as a staunch and loyal friend to his colleagues, at the same time expressing the wish that Mr. Barleyman would long enjoy his wellearned retirement. Tributes were also paid by the chairman (Mr. T. McPhillips) and other directors of the company. Mr. Barleyman, in responding, thanked those present for the very kind remarks passed, and the staff for their very handsome presentation, which, he assured them, would serve to remind him of many happy days spent whilst in the company's employ. —Star,
