THE MARTIAL SPIRIT.
ESSENTIAL TO PEACE EXPANSION. By Telegraph.'— Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 31. 8.20 p.m. New York, Jan. 30. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent says a. report from Tokio states that the Minister for War stated that while it is a matter of great satisfaction to everyone that the Washington Conference is being crowned with success, a serious mistake is being made by some political leaders in Japan in their efforts to disregard the martial spirit of the nation, which ia as essential to the peaceful expansion of the people as it is in time of war. It is wrong to consider the martial spirit as incompatible with the Jimitation of armaments. Modern warfare demands national industry, besides shells and bayonets, therefore if the nation is to advance and hold its own in industrial competition that must necessarily follow the establishment of world peace, the martial spirit must be expanded to such a degree as the tual armament is reduced.—Aus.-N.Z.
