TAKAPUNA MEETING. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. x By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Jan. 31. Following are the acceptances for the second day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting:
There is a big contingent of visiting horses at Hawera. Mason’s teaun, comprising Gloaming, Vespucci, Egotism and Pluto, arriving a day or two ago, while Thespian and a big crowd arrived from the south yesterday.
W. F. Mantle arrived In the morning from New Plymouth with Silver Link, Daniloff, and Red Helen.
In the afternoon Stork, Potoa King, Pure Laziness, Paddington Green, Leithfield, Trombone, Income, Prodigal. Savory, and Crossfire arrived from New Plymouth, and Eldenholm and Big Push from Stratford. R. H. Peperell has been down with Molleen Oge and Resin for a few days. C. O’Connor, starter for the meeting, who was also engaged in a similar capacity a< Takapuna, arrived in Hawera yesterday, not having waited for. the delayed second day at the northern meeting. Capping Day was brought up from Wellington yesterday by the mall train. I Amopg other horses from down the like that have arrived are Pillage, Affectation, Strategy, and Simon. Starters and probable riders in the Egmont Cup are: Vespucci 8.9 (G. Young) ; Marqueteur 8.4 (G. Clarke) ; Egimont Park 7.11 (M. McCarten) ; Stork 7.6 (L. George). NOTES BY “MOTUROA.”
The forty-first Egmont Cup will be run at Hawera to-day, the race having originated in 1882, and continued without interruption through two score years and one. From 1882 to 1895 (inclusive) the distance was two miles; from 1896 to 1899, one mile and threequarters ; after which it was further reduced to a mile and a half.
Many great horses have tad their names enrolled amongst the winners of the Cup, but only two—Dudu and Coronet—won the race twice. Convoy holds the weightcarrying record, 9.8, and the only others to succeed with 9.0 or over were: Coronet (9.6), Chortle (9.5), and Merry Roe (9.0). Egypt holds the time record, 2<min. 33 3-ssec., but Chortle’s 2min. 34 2-s'sec. under 9.5 was an even greater effort. Mr. Jervis George won three cups, and otters to win a double were Messrs. A. Standish, Walter Douglas, E. J. Evans, and G. D. Greenwood. Amongst the successful riders In the race were G. Williams, C. Jenkins, A. Olliver and B. Deeley with three wfhs each. H. Gray and J. O’Shea were each successful twice. Marqueteur, who won with 8.3 last year. Is the only previous winner engaged in to-day’s race. For such a fine stake as 1200 sovs. a disappointing acceptance of four is carded today, but each of the four acceptors is quite capable of running out a good mile and a half, and In a race that is notoriously a bad one for favorites Vespucci may not be the “stone certainty” that the man in the street will tell you, and if caught in the humor, and jn suitable going, Marqueteur may make the son of Varco gallop at the finish—even if he does not beat him. Egmont Park has performed most consistently over all distances this season, but may be better suited by the shorter distance on the second day. Stork is alleged to have been sore lately, and on paper Vespucci appears to have been given a royal chance to score.
If Silver Link Is saddled up for the Flying Handicap she will have a great following. but whether she Can give away from 271bs. to 471bs. remains to be seen. Inah may be on the down grade, but Income and Celmisia are probably better than they hare been before, and Nursing Sister goes well in a small field if the sting is out of the ground. If Silver Link starts she will be hard to beat, and Celmisia and Income may be the best of the others.
Zola won the Ohawe Hurdles last year with 11.10, and beat, a good field, but the Wanganui prad has done nothing startling lately, and Simon, who certainly should have won on the fiat at Foxton last week, may beat him to-day. Opiate reads best of the A good field will lino up for the Whareroa Welter Handicap, and Kuia will only require to reproduce her Awapuni and Marton form to carry 8.4 with distinction. Cold Steel may hold the others safe.
Of the crowd engaged in the Waipapa Hack Handicap, Muraa'hi, Crossfire, Lady Nassau and Erie have recent wins to their credit. Muraahi won easily' enough at, Foxton, and with Lady Nassau should have something to say in the settlement of the
Still Sea, Mark Time, and Roman "should go well in the Apprentices’ Handicap, and the Maiden Scurry will give Manlania or Cochineal a chance to break their “duck.” Some interest will be taken in the Egmont Stakes If 'Gloaming, Thespian, Rational and Silver Link go to the post, though it will be nothing short of an accident If the flrstBMUfI dees not win. Gloaming won th* race
in 1919 and again in 1921. In fact, his owner, Mr. G. D. Greenwood, has won no iess than five of the eight Egmont Stakes
Amongst to-day's acceptors are seven horses which won at Hawera on the corresponding day las* year. They are: Zola, Inah, Marqueteur, Festive, Gloaming, Passin’ Through and Egmont Park.
H. Wheeler has been engaged to ride Nursing Sister and Master Mick at the Hawera meeting.
An exchange is responsible for the statement that Hector Gray’s retainer from Sir Cunliffe-Owen for this season is £3OOO. Jockey Geo. Young, who will be riding Gloaming and Vespucci to-day, is the proud possessor of a handsome silver cup, which is presented to the rider of the winner of the Australian Derbj’. Young was on Cupidon this year, and as the recipient of a cup be probably holds a unique position amongst New Zealand horsemen..
There was a Landslide at Takapuna on Monday, as all of us who backed Boomerday in the Cup know to our sorrow. The failures of Bomerday and Uncle Ned must have cost punters a tidy sum.
The Whenuakura gap is now bridged, and this should have the effect of improving the attendances at the Egmont and Taranaki meetings, though there is little doubt that the wash-out severely affected the acceptance lists for the former gathering.

OPENING TO-DAY. Hawera did not experience the heavy rain that prevailed in various parts of North Taranaki, the weather being fine though windy, and consequently the course should be in good order. There promises to be a big attendance and good racing. The mail train last night was a very heavy one, comprising four extra carriages.
