ATHLETICS

CLIFTON FOOTBALL CLUB SPORTS. RECORD NOMINATIONS. ) Probably no branch of sport has revived since the war more than has athletics. This was evidenced last year by the success that attended the various gatherings held throughout Taranaki. Of these none were more successful than the sports held by the Clifton Club. Encouraged by that success this progressive club set out this year with a most ambitious programme, giving away £l9O «n prize money, the big event —the Sheffield Handicap, of 135 yards—carrying £5O. This enterprise has been justified by the nominations received showing that the club has the support of both running and cycling men throughout the province, and. Indeed, throughout the North Island. The public, therefore, can rely on seeing some great racing on Saturday. The first race will start at 12.30 sharp, and a capable set of officials have been appointed and complete arrangements made, so as to ensure that the events are run off expeditiously. A programme of music will be provided by the Waitara Brass Band, and catering and other arrangements haye been made to ensure the enjoyment of the public, who will, no doubt, amply support the Clifton Club, whose sole aim is to encourage and improve sporting facilities in the town and district.
