SITUATION IN EGYPT.
TERMS OF SOVEREIGNTY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Jan. 29. The Foreign Office states that the Government is prepared to recognise Egyptian sovereignty on condition that Imperial communications are guaranteed, the Government retaining the right to protect foreign communities and demanding a guarantee against foreign aggression. It is reported that Lord Allenby has been called to London to confer with the Government on the present situation in Egypt. London, Jan. 29.
The Foreign Dffice has issued a statement confiiyning Lord Allenby’s return. It says that while unwilling to cede to disorder or violence what it is prepared to grant on its own merits, the Government expresses readiness to invite Parliament to terminate the protectorate and recognise the existence of Egypt as a sovereign State on the following conditions: That the Imperial communications to which Egypt is essential are assured that Britain retains the right and power to protect foreign communities in Egypt, and that Egypt is safeguarded against all foreign aggression or interference. When an agreement embodying ’these conditions is arrived at between the Egyptian Government and Britain the latter Government will invite Parliamentary sanction. — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
CONCILIATORY MEASURES. WEAPONS SEIZED. Cairo, Jan. 29. The signatories of the non-co-opera-tion manifesto who were recently arrested have been released, and the newspapers. suspended for publishing the manifesto, have been permitted to resume publication. The police seized a quantity of bombs and automatic pistols in a native house 2nd made several arrests. The newspapers state that police action thwarted a conspiracy to kill Sawart Pasha, with whom the British authorities are negotiating for an acceptance of the Premiership. A second raid disclosed more bombs and pistols. Six students have been arrested. —Reuter.
