D.J.C. SCRATCHINGS. Dunedin, Last Night. D.J.C. scratchings are:—Publicans and Stewards Wfelter.—Roeeday, at 12.20 p.m. w / THE EGMONjT MEETING. (By ‘“Moturoa.”)' Mr. H. Coyle’s weights for the- Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting, which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday next, appeared promptly to time, and are now the chief topic of the local sporting fraternity. With Affectation engaged in the Cup it was quite anticipated that the handicapper would top the list with the Kilbroney gelding, though his recent form has not been so brilliant as that of the early spring. Vespucci and Egotism have more to recommend them at the present moment, and the Greenwood pair are nicely placed. Marqueteur is let down a whole heap, but he appears to have mislaid his “punch.” Lovematch would only require to be well to give a good account of himself with 7.13, and the lightly regarded Egmont Park may have to be reckoned with under 7.11. One woud require to be certain that Kilgouf was sound to give, him a chance, and Paoanui appears to have trained right off. Aureate reads best of the lightweights, and with the elect of •Mason’s charges may be best supported by ante-post bettors. A fine crowd figure in the Flying Handicap, and the second “leg” of the double offers a wide field for speculation. Silver Link has her full share with 9.12, and Mr. Greenwood may not relish starting Pluto with 9.4. Listowel is well in at 8.5, but is unreliable. Egmont Park 8.3 reads badly compared with Tnah 7.13, and on the 7.10 mark figure a dangerous trio in Sunny Corner, IncoTne and Blackmail. Nursing Sister had too much racing at the holiday meetings, and would be all the better for a spell. Celmisia appears to be the best of the lightweights. Summed up, Sunny Corner, Blackmail, and Celmisia are the picks of the handicap. The minor events should all produce good fields. Simon and Zola are head and shoulders above the hurdlers engaged, and should be quite capable of carrying 11.10 and 11.5 respectively. Kuia, with 8.4, looks to nave all the best of things in the Whareroa Welter, though Lady Kqtiropo 8.0 has nothing to complain of. J Muraahi 8.4 and Redlogue 7.3 have given every inducement to accept in the Waipapa Hack Handicap, and Still Sea 8.3, Lady Nassau 7.12 and Mark Time 7.4 are favorably placed in the Apprentices’ Handi-
cap- . ' . t The Egmont Stakes, run over six furlongs, will be a great “draw” if Gloaming; Thespian. Rational, Tamatete and Silver Link go to the post. Paddington Green is handicapped in the Ohawe Hurdles on the first day of the Egrhont summer meeting, at list 1 ., not IOSt., as previously published. On the whole the weights should give satisfaction, and owners and trainers should note that acceptances for first day events close this (Saturday) evening at S p.m.
TURF TOPICS. i" (By “Moturoa.") Races at Takapuna and Pahiatua today. The Takapuna meeting will be concluded on Monday. Egmont races will take place on Wednesday and Thursday next. They say:—Boomerday (J. O'Shea) will be in the boom to-day. Printemps and Festivity should divide favoritism in the Pahiatua Handicap. Waimatao and Martian Miss may fight out the open sprint at Pahiatua.. Prince Abbey and Golden Bubble are
greatly fancied for the Stewards’ Handicap at Takapuna. The Snake has not much to beat in the Haurakf Hurdles .at Takapuna, and has only to run straight to win.
Esthonia, Polini, Ad Astra, and Guerre a Mort are expected to run lorward in the minor events at Takapuna.
Very numerous entries have been received for the Hamilton meeting on February 15 and 16. Amongst those engaged are Marqueteur, Stork, Bauogue, and Sunny Jim. The Waikanae yearlings put up to auction this week only touched moderate prices. Mr. B. Joll paid top price (550gns.) for a colt by Kilbroney from Sunbird.
Lady Kotiropo was unlucky at Trentham, but may make amends at Pahiatua. Others that should show up in their engagements are Pitch Dark, Mountain March and March On.
The principal winning owners at the Wellington meeting were:—J. W. Lowe, £2100; executors of Douglas Estate, £1535; G. D. Greenwood, £1160; G. M. Currie £850; Sir Geo. Clifford £840; W. Couser £B2O, and K. D. Duncan £655. The 'Government takes ten per cent, out of these - amounts, and at the end of th-e season Massev will be the only winner. Wonder how ling owners will stand this exorbitant tax?
There was no fluke about The Hawk’s brilliant victory in the Waterloo Stakes at Trentham, and the time recorded suggests that even Gloaming will have to stretch his neck when be meets the brilliant Martian gelding over six furlongs. Perhaps they will clash in the Taranaki Stakes. Then we will have a race worth going miles to see-
Celmisia. returned home on , Thursday looking none the worse for her exertions at Trentham, where she ran second to Anomaly on the concluding day. She will probably be railed through to Hawera early in the week.
Insurrection has caught it hot with 8.13 in the Dunedin Cup, and Amythas ]0.3, Winning Hit 9.5, and Malaga 8.8, all read better. Purple Spur 7.9 may bo the elect of the Chokebore stable.
Quiniro occasioned some surprise locally by winning a good hurdle race at Randwick last Saturday. He has shown some promise over fences before leaving Taranaki I believe, but few thought he was solid enough to see out a distance hurdle race in good company. J. O'Shea will pilot Golden Bubble in his Takapuna engagements. The Absurd gelding won the -Stewards’ Hanoicap there last year with the same horse* man up, and paid a great “price.”
Sydney scribes are looking forward t« seeing Gloaming over there this autumn ana Farceur, Pluto, Egotism and Thes* pian are also engaged at the A.J.G meeting at that time. Beauford anti Eurythmic are reported to be in great heart, and will keep our champion busy when they meet.
Epitaph bas thrown off her soreness and should be bright and well when next stepped out. / >ignorella is now trained in the Waikato, and is under E. Tutchen’s care. He should be useful at “the smalls'* up North.
An Auckland scribe complains of the alleged “stuffing” of acceptance lists which is said to bo prevalent at present No doubt the authorities will ask for some definite information regarding this abuse, and will promptly call the offenders to book.
Weights for the Taranaki J.C. Autumn meeting are not due until February 3, and will appear in the Taranaki News on the morning following the concluding day of the Egmont R.C. summer meeting. This will give Mr. Coyle every opportunity of framing his weights on Hawera form, and will do away with the wretched and sometimes unfair fixed penalties imposed.
