SWIMMING.
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB.
. SUCCESSFUL SPORTS. A swimming carnival under the auspices of the New Plymouth Amateur (Swimming Club was held at the municipal baths last evening. The weather conditions were unfavorable, a cold wind sweeping across the surface of the baths. Despite Htis all the events on the programme filled well, the public attended in large numbers, and a most successful gathering was recorded. Besides local swimmers Hawera was represented by a strong team, whilst several Inglewood swimmers also participated. During the evening an exhibition of fancy swimming and diving was given by Messrs. P. A, Mathieson and N. A. Christiansen. Swimming with hands and feet tied, breast stroke head first, walking in the water, length of the baths in four strokes, spinning top, submarines and somersaulting were a few of the “stunts” given by these two versatile performers, who were enthusiastically applauded at the conclusion of the exhibition. McHardie (New Plymouth) 6 sec 1, W. Reece (Inglewood) 3sec 2. Time, 73sec. Second heat: C. G. Barrett (Hawera) ser 1, R. Person (New Plymouth) 4sec 2. Time, 7Wsec. Third heat: S. Polson (Hawera) ser 1, F. Grant (Hawera) Isec and E. Annabell (Wellington) 3sec dead heat 2. Time, 73 3-ssec. Final: McHardie 1. Barrett 2, Reece 3. McHardie led throughout and won with a little in hand. Time, 73see.

Final: Miss Lash 1, Miss Horsup 2. Time, 26 l-ssee. Ribbon Diving.—S. Polson 1, A. H. Blennerhassett 2. Six* competitors. Men’s Inter-Club Diving (total points BG). —A. H. Blennerhassett 30| points 1. R. G. Howell 26 points 2. Five competitors. Inter-Club Relay Race. —Hawera A (Polson, Barrett, J. G. Grant, Wilkinson) 1, Old Boys A (McHardie, Morrison. Blennerhassett, Boon) 2, Hawera B 3. Seven teams started and a great race between the last men resulted in Polson (Hawera) winning from Morrison (Old Boys A) by a touch. No time was taken. Tub Race. —M. Anthony 1, Lyon 2. This race caused much amusement. Bun Race.—Corkill 1. During the evening it was announced that the New Plymouth Club intend holding two more carnivals before the end of the season, whilst the Hawera Club is holding carnivals on February 1 and 2, the nights of the races, when valuable trophies are to be competed for.
