EGMONT SHOW.
PEOPLE’S DAY POSTPONED.
WET WEATHER YESTERDAY
FIXTURE CONCLUDES TO-DAY. r
The Egmont A. and P. Association were unfortunate in the matter of weather for People’s Day yesterday. Rain set in at the conclusion of the first day and there was a. very heavy downfall during the night. This continued through the early part of the morning, and as at 9 o’clock there appeared no signs of clearing up, the executive decided to postpone the show until to-day. They were assisted in this decision by the fact that the ground was too soft to permit of the jumping events being carried out with safety.
Notices sent out to the various centres, so as to inconvenience the public as little as possible. About 11 o’clock it began to clear, and a strong wind soon had a drying effect, but it was too late to alter the decision. There was a fair crowd in town, and a sprink* ling journeyed to the showground when the sun shone out in the afternoon, and several of the side-show people opened up and did fair business. It was unfortunate for the association, as they had made arrangements to cope with a very large attendance, and it was particularly disappointing to the officials w’ho had worked so hard. However, given fine weather to-day, there should be a good attendance, as the Hawera business people readily agreed to the request that they should close, to-day instead of yesterday, and the owners of cattle and stock have agreed to leave their exhibits, so that the parade will be a sight worth witnessing. The public will find much to interest them in the ring events. These comprise jumping competitions, including the champion jumping competition, which carries £65 in prize money, and also the dog trials, when the winning dogs of the first day will give an exhibition of their skill. In addition there are various trade displays and the side-shows. The Hawera Band will ! provide a programme of music, whilst the catering arrangements, etc., are in J capable hands. i The afternoon train north has been
' delayed to leave Hawera at 4.52 p.m. I A number o-f additional awards were ■ made yeuterday. and this morning judging will conclude, when the various attractive harness horse events will be decided. School children will be greatly interested in the calf rearing competition and, the cow judging, each of which will bn decided. The results of yesterday’s awards are: — • CATTLE.
