FIRES.
A SERIOUS BLAZE. By Telegraph.—Press Association.* Te Awamutu, Jan. 2G. A fire broken out at 11 o’clock last night in a large wooden block of shops and offices opposite the Post Office. Fanned by a strong easterly gale the flames spread quickly. For nearly an hour tire brigade fought to check the spread and ultimately succeeded in confining the damage to one end of the block. Oliphant,, solicitor, and Swavbrick, solicitor, were burnt out. Brown, saddler, and Tucker Brothers, tobaccon-
ists. were partly burnt out. , Goodall, mercery and boots, had his premises soaked by water and minor damage done. Vile, saddler, Ingram, fruiterer, Clark, storekeeper, Lee, jeweller and the Piccadilly Dining Rooms were damaged by water. The fire was mainly in thb solicitors’ offices and the roof of the building. The Brigade made a wonderful save considering the direction and force of the gale. The buildings are owned by C. B. Smith, and it is understood were insured in the State Office. Other* insurances are unknown.
