RAID ON A STEAMER.

LURE OF CARGO OF GOLD. SONOMA HAS MORE TROUBLE. By Telegraph.—-Ptm» Amu —Copyright Received Jan. 26, 9.45 p.m. San Francisco, Jan. 26. Hard luck seems to be dogging the mail steamer Sonoma, on which a sensational theft of bullion occurred recently. Captain Trask, upon arrival here from Sydney, reported serious trouble with stevedores at Pago Pago. The Sonoma, which arrived with a ekrgo of gold and other commodities valued at many million dollars, stopped at Pago Pago to load other stuffs and the group convicts were used as stevedores.

Suddenly the latter stormed over the vessel in an attempt to break into the treasure chests and the entire crew were needed to hold off the- invaders at the point of the revolver. Nothing waa lost and no damage was done. The Invaders were successfully driven off and the vessel arrived here safely.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
