EGMONT SHOW.
THE OPENING DAY.
FINE EXHIBIT OF CATTLE. LIST OF THE AWARDS. The Egmont A. and P. Association was favored with fine weather for the opening of their 38th annual show at Hawera yesterday, though the conditions became dull as the afternoon wore on and rain fell about 5 o’clock. For the opening day there was a good attendance, and given fine w’eather to-day there should be a record attendance. The association fully deserves the patronage of the public, whose comfort and convenience have been their first consideration, and the many improvements. particularly in the way of seating accommodation, that have been effected during the past year will be greatly appreciated. \. The committee and officials have worked hard and enthusiastically, though faced by various difficulties, including the financial stringency and the mishap to the railway bridge at Whenuakura, which affected exhibits from below Patea. The show undoubtedly reflects credit on them and on the loyal support of the farmers of the district. The show was held earlier this year than usual, but owing to the circumstances mentioned it is impossible to state whether the change was a step in the right direction or not. Entries show a considerable decrease, totalling 1295 as against 1774 last year. The heaviest drop is in sheep, which total 95 as against 345 last year. Cattle alfh show a decline from 540 to 420, horses from 364 to 294, and pigs from 88 to 45. The main factor in t'he decrease was the railway breakdown. The arrangements for the conduct of the show were first class, everything working smoothly and the judging proceeded apace. The judge of the Jersey section had a very heavy day, and did not complete his task till late in the evening, [ having both male and females to ad- [ indicate upon. In the heavy horse section judging was not finished until late, the arrival of the judge being delayed by the trains. However, the Stewards all did their parts, with the result that t'he prize awards were quickly put up. Mr. M. C. Crighton. the acting secretary. got through the ordeal of his first show very creditably, everything having been provided for. He was ably assisted by Mr. R MeCay, . whilst Mr. F. G. Seddon. secretary of the Wanganui Association, rendered invaluable aid. Mr. E. A. Washer, the president, was assiduous in his attention to all. whilst a deal of praise must be accorded. Mr. A. L. Campbell, the Press and catering steward. The catering was in the hands of Messrs. Dustin, Ltd., and Mr. Capon had the publican’s booth. /There are a number of machinery and trade exhibits, which attracted considerable attention, whilst the side-shows are well worth a visit.
THE CATTLE. As usual the Jersey predominates in the cattle sections and most of the prominent breeders of the province are represented. In the males W. Pollock (Stratford) scores the championship with Pecuarius. The reserve also comes north, A. A. Ward (Tariki) securing it with Miro Meadow’s Maori Boy. The noted Elf’s Beauty, owned by H. B. Lepper (Lepperton). scored the championship in cows and C. H. Sharp’s Avoca’s Daisy the reserve. Competition throughout was very keen. In Friesians the entry was not large, but some good quality stock was shown. All the championships went to South Taranaki. W. Dowden (Ohangai) scored with the bull and Thos. Perry (Martgatoki) with the cow, whilst the reserves went respectively to A. W- Tmlah (Kaupokonui) and H. E. Johnson (Hawera).
The Ayrshire? drew about 40 entries, the judge remarking that the class for aged cows was very good. Both championship and reserve went to this class, W. Hall (Lepperton) scoring the former with Fancy of Armade and F. Mills (Tokaora) the latter with Stately Bell. In bulls, W. Hall (Lepperton) scored the championship with Dominion Beauty’s Bonus and F. Mills’ David of Waipapa was reserve. The yearling bulls were particularly good. In Milking Shorthorns J. C. Wright was the principal exhibitor. In fat cattle H. Middleton (Waverlev) scored heavily, whilst the MooreHunter Estate exhibited freely in Shorthorns. SHEEP. Though not numerically strong the quality of the. sheep exhibited was an outstanding feature, the judges being well pleased with the animals shown. Border Leicesters were a nice uniform lot, A. S. Tonks scoring heavily. Romney Marsh were not quite up to the usual standard, but Best Bros, showed some nice sheep. The Lincolns were of good type, the older sheep bein «• the better. P. Bremer scored heavily here, as did J. H. Baker, the judge specially mentioning a ewe above 21 months owned by the former. The fat sheep were good, the judge being specially pleased with a pen of fat lambs; though they were rather on the heavy side. PIGS. The judge was very pleased with the quality of the pigs. He expressed him- , self as more than pleased with the way they were shown and the pens provided by the association. HORSES. The judge of the heavy horses considered’them a fairly good class, particularly the two-year-olds and three-year-olds. whilst 'he considered the farmers’ horses a good class. In the heavy, as well as other classes, there were horses that would do credit in any show-ring. The judge of the thoroughbreds and ponies was quite enthusiastic and in the former had great praise for several entries, especially in the yearlings and colts. The ponies were a good even lot, but their manners might he improved. He was struck with the riding of the children. In hacks there was competition and the judge had difficulty in sorting .out the placed horses, the weight-carrying colts being particularly good. CATTLE. FAT CATTLE. Judge: Mr. K. W.
