MELBOURNE TRAGEDY.
OPENING OF THE INQUEST. AN AMAZING STATEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received January 25, 11.35 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 25. The inquest has opened concerning the death of the girl Tirtschke, who was found in a city side street murdered and outraged. Ross, who is charged with the crime, was present in custody. After evidence was given that the girl was seen in a wine saloon kept by Roas, Ivy Matthews, formerly manageress for Ross, said prisoner told her: “The moment I am m the presence of children I lose my head. 1 did that to that child and in a few minutes she was dead. I did not tile a cord round her neck. After she was dead I picked up a knife and could have slashed her to bits.” —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
