OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The chairman of the Hydro-electric Power Board (Mr. C. A. Trotter) and Mr. M. O’Brien (a member of the board) have been in Wellington during the week arranging finance for the electric power works. It is stated that successful arrangements have been made for the continuation of the work., The deputation did not set out with the intention of raising the full amount of the loan, but to obtain sufficient money to keep the works going. This the deputation have been successful in doing. The Harbor Board had also empowered Mr. M. O’Brien (a member of the board) to interview the department for the purpose of getting the consent of the department to enable the- Harbor Board to increase the interest on a loan from 54 to current rates ruling for loans; also to “sound” the powers regarding the possibility of applying outside the Dominion for money. In fact. Mr. O’Brien will be expected to bring back all information that can be obtained regarding the best ways and means of going on with the harbor construction works. It is admitted that the financial institutions and the Government deparments do not look with favor on harbor loans, or with the same favor as hydro-electric loans.

The new Eltham-Opunake mail service proprietors have given the settlers on the Eltham Road an excellent service, and it should be the means of enthusing a good deal of activity on that route. It is a well settled district, and the settlers will no doubt accord the enterprising proprietors every support. The south-east gale prevailed for two days, making it very unpleasant for the Damp parties at the beach. The Opunake bowlers had good luck against Auroa, winning by a small margin.
