THE NEED OF STABILITY
When addressing the Liberal Conference in London recently, Mr. Winston Churchill strongly emphasised that Britain’s stability was the nation’s main asset, especially as recuperation required stability and national co-opera-tion, not party strife. Not only did he dwell upon this need for the British people but he claimed that stability was even more needed abroad than in Britain, for Europe was almost ruined. There is far more in this demand for stability than Appears on the surface. It strikes at what is really one of the greatest blots of the age—political, strife for party purposes. The general conditions affecting most of the nations are of such a nature that nothing but the wisest statesmanship and the most profound attention to .the complex P ro ’ : lems affecting recuperation, will be of real service. It is a time when there should exist that whole-hearted co-oper-ation which, alone can enable the peoples of the nations to pull together in a common effort to overcome the difficulties with which they are faced. Party strife is always deplorable, hut becomes a serious menace when world conditions are so unsettled as tn need stability. It may be claimed that, tho experiments in the direction of coalition have not been successful, and that they do not make for good government. Be that as it may, ° if stability is to be secured there must be a drawing together of the best and wisest brains in every country to help in the process of rehabilitation. What the world needs is help in reconstruction, not destructive and detractive tactics. Mr. Churchill's advice is as sound as it is timely, though it is to be feared that it will fall on deaf ears.
