COST OF LIVING LOWER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—copyright. Melbourne, Jan. 22. The Commonwealth Statistician’s figures for the last quarter of 1921 show that the combined cost of food, groceries 'and house rent in the six capital cities decreased 14.1 per cent., compared with the corresponding period in the previous year. ALIEN REGULATIONS. Melbourne, Jan. 22. The West Australia:; Government has discontinued the operation of the Aliens Registration Act, stating it will not use the police force to carry out the work unless the Commonwealth pays the expenses. The Federal Treasurer has refused this. It is now expected other States will follow West Australia’s lead. TAXATION OF Hobart, Jan. 22. The National Council of Women’s Conference adopted a resolution affirming the principle of motherhood endowment in necessitous cases and favoring the taxation of bachelors. TROUBLE AT COAL MINES. Sydney, Jan. 22. Serious trouble has arisen at the Pclau Main colliery, where the machinemen operating the new turbine coal cutting machines arc dissatisfied with the rates and conditions. Arrangements were made, in accordance with a suggestion by the tribunal, to work without the new machines until a. decision is arrived at. but the management closed the colliery until the miner’s lodge as. a whole guaranteed the use of new machines,
