BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. EXTENSION OF WATER MAINS. The New Plymouth Borough Council tact last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs. J. Kibby, V. Griffiths, W. Rumball, T. N. Blackhall, E. Dingle, R. L. Parkin, and R. A. Large. Application was made by Mr. J. Lehrke, of Frankley Road, for a. water connection to his property. He- stated two chains of pipe would be required to cover the distance between the main and his boundary. He understood that £4OO had been allocated for such cases as this. Four ratepayers of the Frankley Road applied for a continuation of the water supply to connect their residences. They stated they were the only homes on the road now which did not have the benefit of the supply. They understood that Mr. Lehrke had been promised that the supply would be extended to his house, and they suggested that when this was being done the pipe might well be extended to their homes. The Mayor stated that the engineer’s report on mains that the cost of a length to connect up the dead end in the area under review would be £2l-84. Consideration of the requests was deferred till the next meeting, when the engineer’s report on mains will be discussed. SMITH STREET. Cr. Griffiths asked for an idea of when Smith Street would be metalled. The engineer replied that all formed streets would be taken in hand immediately the tarring season was over. Cr. Griffiths advocated that the work should be done now, as a matter of economy, while it was in a good condition. If they waited Until climatic conditions were unsuitable for tarring it was also likely the weather would be unsuitable for metalling. He moved that tenders be called for the carting and spreading of metal on the street. Cr. Rumball seconded. The Mayor pointed out that it would be only a* short time before the work was taken in hand and the calling of tenders would take some time. The motion was lost. GENERAL. The borough engineer was authorised to lay a concrete channel to the length of kerb near the Waiwakaiho bridge towards Taylor’s store. A telegfam was received from the State Advances Office intimating tha£ it was hoped to submit the waterworks loan to the Advances Board for final approval shortly. A recommendation from the electric light committee as follows was adopted: That Messrs. Payne and Blanchard be informed that the council cannot see its way to grant them any concession in regard to the extra price paid by them for 26J tons of cement used on extra works in connection with contract No. 1. Consideration of the question of the disoosal of surplus hydro-electric lands at Kent Road was deferred until next April, on the recommendation of the electric light committee.
