FIRE AT URENUI.

HOTEL STABLES BURNED. A HEAVY LOSS. Tlie stables adjoining the Urenui Hotel were destroyed by fire shortly after one o’clock yesterday morning. The hotel, which is 63ft from the stables, was greatly endangered by the flames, but a bucket brigade kept the back wall from catching alight till a breeze sprang up and carried the Hames in the opposite direction, a motor lorry, six tons of chaff, and about a ton of manure were destroyed with the stable. The licensee (Mr. J. S. O’Neill) was awakened at 1.10 a.m. by Mrs O’Neill, who had observed that the stable was burning. It was a building of considerable size, standing about 20 yards from the rear of the hotel, and Mr. O’Neill found it to be then well alight. He roused the inmates of the hotel, and 'water was carried in buckets for use in preventing the back wail of the hotel from catching. The heat became intense. At one time the paint was blazing practically all over it, and, though the men did not slacken their efforts, it seemed, that the hotel must share the fate of the stable,

The danger was lessened when a breeze sprang up and carried the flames away from the hotel. The helpers were then able to complete their work of safeguarding the main buildings. Four (500gallon tanks were practically emptied o. water, by the brigade. The heat was intense, and some of the lire lighters were scorched about the arms. Their appliances also included ordinary spray pumps, which were used to some effect.

The stable, which was a fair-sized building, was insured for £2OO in the Commercial Union office, but it is valued at probably £2OO above that figure. The owner is Mrs. Eva Kennedy, of Wellington. The lorry, which was insured for £5OO, was the property of Mr. J. S. Fitzgerald, who will be a loser in spite of the cover. A second motor lorry, the property of the same owner, was standing in the yard, but was pushed out of danger. The other contents of the stable were not insured.
