COMMERCIAL.
SOUTHERN MARKETS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. It is stated that the "wheat crops in North Canterbury should be well up to the average, so there should be no likelihood of a shortage. A few new lines of grain and seeds have been coming to hand during the last few days?, but the recent rain has held up threshing operations to some extent. From the North Island there has lately been a good demand for oats, but these orders have mostly been met out of old stocks. Some early white tlover has made its appearance, but has not met with much demand. It is too early yet to judge what the market for it will be like. Although new barley was reported to be scarce it is reported that a nice line which was offered to brewers at 3s 6d could not be disposed of. It is stated that the brewers will hold a meeting next week to deal with the question of barley prices. The demand for potatoes dropped after the recent rain. Some lines for Auckland have been sold on the basis of £5 per ton for delivery this month, and £4 to £4 10s for delivery next month. The dry spell has resulted in some patchy crops of onions, which have been sold at £5 a ton for delivery this month. LONDON MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date January 18: Tallow. —We quote present spot values for the following descriptions: — Fine mutton. £2 2s 3d per cwt.; good beef, £1 19s 6d per cwt.; mixed, £1 13s 6d per cwt. Market, inactive. New Zealand Frozen Meat. —Lamb, 9%d per lb.; wether and maiden ewe, light 6%d, heavy 5%d per lb.; ewe, light 5 l-8d per lb., heavy 4 7-8 d per lb.; beef, quotation's nominal. Market overstocked. INGLEWOOD SALE.

Though there were but few stock presented for sale at the Fanners’ Co-op. yards on Wednesday, business was on distinctly more cheerful lines, nearly every line being sold, and the sale is stated to have been the best held by the Organisation since the end of the year, Jn calves, heifers only were enquired for. Small Jersey Weaners made from 42s to 43s fid, store cows 40s, better conditioned up to 60s, 10 to 18-months empty Jersey strain heifers sold for 635, HolsteinS 30s, matured bulls from 35s to 425, an ] 8-months grade Jersey hull made 40s, springing heifer £5 15s, cow in full milk £6 ss, and mixed store ewes 55..
