Mr. D. H. L. Corrigan, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Tauranga, is on a short holiday visit to New Plymouth. A Paris cablegram says ’ that General Petain has been appointed a generalissimo in war time and an inspector-general in peace time.
Mr. Robert. Pollock, manager of Mother Hubbard Pantomime Co., which opens its Taranaki season at. New Plymouth, on the 30th and 31st inst., was in New Plymouth yesterday. The Wellington Times states: Dr. George H. Thompson, until lately senior house surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital, intends practising his profession at New Plymouth. At the meeting of the committee, of the New Plymouth Carnegie Institute on Thursday evening the chairman (Mr. W. H. Skinner) made reference to the approaching departure of one of the committee, Mr. A. R. Ryder, stating that Mr. Ryder had been one of the most regular attenders at committee meetings and had always been a great help both in the deliberations of the committee and’ in assisting the chairman. Mr. Ryder, in reply, said that he had been very pleased at the progress of the library and museum and at the way the public were supporting them. If such support was continuously forthcoming the institute would be worthy of the district. He regretted he had not been able to do more for the library and museum, as he had always been keen on such institutions.
