FLYING NOT IN IT.

OVERLAND FROM NEW PLYMOUTH TO TE KUITI. Writes a recent visitor to New Plymouth, under date January 16, from Te Kuiti:— For excitement and thrills flying is not in it compared with a motor trip from New Plymouth to Te Kuiti after heavy rains. Leaving New Plymouth at 8 a.m. on Sunday (the 15th inst.), jve experienced very heavy rain to Urenui, and just as we were contemplating abandoning the trip, the rain subsided. In spite of many warnings that it was impossible to ge through, we persevered, and reached our destination without a stoppage. From New Plymouth to the top of Mount Messenger the road is fairly good, but that is where it ends, and then on our “fun” began. Slithering here and there, we camo down the mountain in great style, £xlo deep in slush the whole way. This condition prevailed right to the punt at Mokau. From here to the foot of Taumatamaire mountain, the going was a little easier, but the climb up that hill must rank as the most exciting experience in my calendar. Our machine simply pushed its way through to the top like a tank on war service. So as to give us perhaps a better, view below, the car often had us perilously close to drops of several hundred feet, just as if it knew we were out to see the sights. Primeval forests, gorges, mountains, great limestone cliffs, rivers, creeks, and the ocean are Nature’s chief contribution to the beauty of this wonderful trip. Tf a good main road existed right through, tourists, would have a veritable feast of attractions from Rotorua to Mount Egmont.
