THE OMOANA DISTRICT.

GOVERNMENT HELP SOUGHT. Wellington, Jan. 19. A deputation consisting of Messrs. C. J. Belcher and A. McWilliam, chairman and member of the Eltham County Council, introduced by Mr. O. Hawken, M.P., interviewed the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Public Works, this maiming and placed before him the position of the settlers at Omoana and Moeroa as a result of the recent cloudburst, which destroyed the roads and rendered communication almost impossible. The deputation asked assistance in the shape of the Government putting ‘on a gang of road navvies to make tracks and restore the roads to a passable condition. The Minister received the deputation sympathetically, and said he was obtaining a departmental report. Probably a gang would be put on very shortly. The question of obtaining accommodation for the men had to be considered. Inquiries were being made as to the woolsheds available near the site of the works.

The deputation was gratified with the Minister’s sympathetic reception.
