Albert Walter Agent (Mr. Spence) pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to give an income tax return. Mr. Spence stated that defendant was a farmer in a small way, and his earnings for the year had been £358 15s 4d. Defendant had not sent in a return the previous year, and an assessment tax of £l3 was levied on him. A return for the year had now been prepared and would be sent in. Mr. Little, representing the Crown Prosecutor, said that this was the first case‘of its kind in Stratford. Whilst it was not desired that a heavy penalty should, be inflicted, he was instructed to ask that the penalty should be a substantial one in order that residents of the district who were liable for taxation might be warned of their liabilities in failing to give returns. The maximum fine was £lOO and the minimum fine £2. The magistrate said that it was absolutely essential that everybody who was required to do so should send in a proper notice of his income for the year, so that the business of the country should be carried on. Taves had to be paid, and though this was probably • only a matter of neglect on defendant’s | part, it was a serious matter to neglect to send in returns. Defendant would be fined £5 and 17s 6d costs. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases:—Farmers’ i Co-op. v. H. H. Peters, 6s (costs £2 15s); Farmers’ Co-op. v. The popularity of the automobile race in Paramount pictures in which Wallace Reid has starred, has resulted in the screening of “Too Much Speed,” another original Byron Morgan story with the race track as a background. In this new picture, which will open at the King’s Theatre, Stratford, tonight. Mr. Reid again will be seen in the pilot’s overalls and helmet, speeding around the course to the speedometer’s tune of a hundred and ten miles per hour, and winning a race and the consent of the girl’s father to her wedding. The picture is a continuation of the experience of the characters in “What’s Your Hurry?” M. Reid’s previous automobile picture, and the three principal characters of that story, Dusty Rhoades, played by Mr. Reid; Virginia MacMurran, played by Agnes Ayres; and Pat MacMurran, played by Theodore Roberts, are again brought to life.
Dusty Rhoades is on the point of marrying Virginia, when he races a rival dealer on the open road, and enrages old Pat MacMurran. who declares the wedding off. Dusty elopes with the bride, old Pat pursues, and both are gaoled for speeding. After serving his sentence, Dusty, with Virginia’s help, secretly buys Pat’s Pakro racing car, which has been out of the game for two years, enters the big event, and wins the race.
