TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Taranaki entries to-morrow. Wellington Cup on Saturday. The Egotism-Pluto “double” is very Ngata is a hot order for the Foxton Cup. _ Mark Triboulet off for a race at Trentham. i With Spook out of the road, Opiate might pick up a hurdle race at Foxton. Egmont entries are very large, but the £1,200 cup might have attracted more horses —and better ones. A. McCormack will be riding at Foxton, and his mount in the Cup will be Detroit —if the old fellow starts. Maniania, Cochineal and Mark Time look the best of the crowd of maidens engaged at Hawera next month. Mr. J. Raymond (Bulls) now owns the broodmare Thea (Demesihenes —Te Hon Hou). She was sent to Acre this season The crowd in the Wellington Stakes are mostly poor cattle, and whatever beat,! Farceur should very nearly win. When sizing up the open sprint at Trentham don’t overlook the fact that Pluto carried 9.2 when he ran Farceur (7.1) to a bare length in the Royal Stakes, run in 1.13. The Junipers’ Flat Handicap at Trentham on Saturday is run over a mile, and the issue looks very open, though Explorer, Wamba and Sir Roseberry appear to have plenty of admirers. “Neuritis” —there’s a fine name for a racehorse! If the fashion spreads we may expect to read something like this shortly: “Appendicitis appeared sore, but Toothache moved strongly, and led past the stand, followed by Typhoid Fever, Eczema, and Neuralgia, while Obesity, Rheumatism and Lumbago quickly tailed off. Entering the back stretch Eczema made a rash attempt to get up on the rails, but was blocked, and Toothache was still raging strongly. Typhoid Fever took charge at the distance, and never gave anything else a hope, etc. Notable absentees from the Wellington Cup are Foo Chow, Vagabond, Marqueteur. Boomerday and Festivity. Only four dropped out of the Telegraph Handicap, but all the well backed ones were paid up for. The Hawk is being quietly nibbled at for the Telegraph Handicap at Wellington, and many who saw the pair run at Ellerslie are favoring the Winning Hit —The Hawk combination.
