Orders for papers may also be left with the«:n. BOROUGH COUNCIL. . Jan. 17. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Stratfond Borough Council was held on Monday' night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), Crs. R. H. Cameron, S. Ward, A. Stewart, W. Mclnnes. C. Jackson. T. Lawson, S. B. Hunter and C. B. Walsh. WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The works committee reported that owing to the present financial depression and the little likelihood of obtaining any further loan money next year, the council seriously consider whether the services of the borough engineer should be retained. The report was dealt with in committee, and it was resolved that the engineer be given three months’ notice. The borough engineer reported that work on the Cloton Road footpath had •cost £95 3s lOd. An area of 2930 square yards on Broadway North. 17| chains in length, was repaired at a*cost of £57 10s Gd. An area of 1056 square yards on Broadway South, <S chains in length, was repaired at a cost of £29 5s 6d. An area of 2244 square yards on Juliet Street, 17 chains in length, was repaired at a cost o'f £45 10s Bd. Pembroke Road was tar-sealed from the borough 'boundary to Hamlet Street. The footpath on the western side of Regan Street, from Broadway to Seytown Street, was re-tarred.
The fire which occurred at the council yards was responsible for the loss of between 50 and 60 gallons of tar, but very little damage was done. Plans had been prepared for a sewer in Orlando Street, and work will be carried out as soon as labor is available, at an estimated cost of £lO4. Cr. Cameron protested against the estimated cost of tarring the borough streets.
Cr. Jackson pointed out that a great deal of tar was being put on the streets, and this would keep down the cost next year.
The portion of the engineer’s report referring to the cost of tarring was referred to the works committee to report upon, and the other part of the report was adopted. Cr. Ward moved that the works committee bring down a report of the of a motor lorry, ancL of a tar sprayer, and how soon the latter could be secured.—Carried. GENERAL. A letter from the Mksterton Corporation Gas Department, offering to sell ashes from the retort furnaces, was received. The secretary of the fire brigade applied for five working uniforms and twenty-five caps.—-The matter was left for the general committee to present a report. Dr. Monk, of Wanganui, medical officer of health, wrote with regard to the Campaign against rats, asking to be supplied with monthly returns showing the number of rats killed and the amount of poison Ihid down. Mr. W. Holmes ' wrote, protesting against the valuation which had 'been placed on his property. It was resolved that the applicant should be requested to again apply for a valuation if the new valuation was considered excessive. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. Downie Stewart) sent a telegram asking council to open lists Tn its district for the purpose of receiving subscriptions towards a wedding gift for Princess Mary. The abattoir report for the month showed that the following stock was slaughtered during the morith:—Cattle 102, calves 3. sheep $3B. Lambs 372, pigs 52. The e fees amounted to £73 17s. The borough inspector reported that he had taken three cows and two horses during the month, and had secured three convictions fon traffic by-law breaches, amounting to - £3 10s. J. Aagard was appointed junior clerk to the council. Accounts amounting to £479 17s 6d were passed for payment. DOMAIN BOARD. At the conclusion of the ordinary meeting the council sat as the Domain Board, and a report of the operations of the board during 1921 was presented. The report stated that during the year a concrete base had been built near the entrance to King Edward Park to accommodate the 'war trophy field gun. Noxious weeds had been kept down and fences, bridges and paths had been maintained. During the ensuing year it was proposed to make a special effort locally to raise sufficient funds to make a start with a scheme of suggested improvements which Mr. Black, of Palmerston North, had prepared. The statement of liabilities and receipts showed that the board has a balance of cash in the bank of £29 8s 7d.
It was decided that the tender of J. Villiers for the lease of the borough section in Orlando Street at £l5 per annum be accepted. PERSONAL. The town clert; (Mr. P. Skoglund) left by the mail train for Wellington this morning on a business trip. He expects to be back again on Thursday. There was a crowded attendance at the barracks of the local corps oi the Salvation Army last night, when a public farewell was tendered Captain and Mrs. Montgomery, who are going to Wellington this week. A very enjoyable musical programme was gone through, and several speakers testified to the good work done in Stratford by the- guests of the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery suitably responding. BOWLING. Tn a match against Stratford on the Stratford green, an Eltham rink were defeated by one up on the last head. The scores were: —Eltham: Drayton, Smalley, Ross, Castles (s) 27 lost u> Stratford —Porritt, Butcher, J. S. McDonald, Harris (s) 28.
Next Thursday the Avon Club will play a match against Eltham, at Eltham.
