THREAT OF WAR.
TWO FACTIONS IN CHINA. CLASH MEANS CHAOS. ULTIMATUM ISSUED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received January 16, 7.20 pan. Pekin, Jan. 16. Governor Wu Peifu has instructed General Hunan at Hupeh to send an ultimatum to the Pekin Government giving the Cabinet of Liang Shi Yi three days to resign. Governor Peifu is moving troops north from Hupeh. The Cabinet has replied refusing to resign under any circumstances.
WASHINGTON UPSET.
FAR EASTERN PROBLEMS. MAY DELAY THE PARLEYS. Received Jan. 16, 8.5 p.m. Washington, Jan. 15. Chinese circles are much concerned at the reception of news that We Peifu has demanded the resignation of the Liang Shi Yi Cabinet, otherwise, according to his ultimatum, he will commence war in seven days. He is already marching north. Civil war means chaos, as ft is expected all three super-Tuchuns will be embroiled. Some of the Chinese advisers take a very gloomy view of the situation, and think its developments may mean the indefinite postponement of further consideration of all Chinese questions at this Conference. If war be imminent they might logically take the attitude that it yould be better to wait till affairs in China are settled. Should Wu Peifu secure the resignation of the present Cabinet it is not known what its successors may want, or even whether they would confirm the delegation in their position.—Special to Australian Press Assn.
