N.P. HIGH SCHOOLS.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET 4 The Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools met last night. Present: Messrs. J. S. Fox (chairman), E. P. Webster, L. C. Sladden, A. Washer, and H. Trimble. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. L. A. Nolan, S. G. Smith, M.P., A. Morton, F. W. Atkinson, and Dr. E. F. Fookes. The chairman reported that, together with the principal (Mr. Moyes), he had waited upon the Director of Education at Wellington regarding the appointment of a successor to Mr. A. R. Ryder. The deputation received a very courteous reception. A definite appointment has not yet been made.—On the .motion of Mr. Webster, seconded by Mr. Sladden, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and principal for their good offices. The secretary intimated that Dr. Fookes, who was appointed to prepare a report on the medical inspection of pupils, had a plan which would be brought before the board at its next meeting.

Intimation was received that Messrs. F. W. Atkinson and S. G. Smith had been re-appointed as members for a further term. The chairman expressed appreciation of the valued services rendered to the board by the two members concerned. Mr. Vai. Duff was appointed part time teacher for commercial subjects at the girls’ school, the department meanwhile approving the board policy in the matter of part-time instructors.

The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr. H. J. Lowe) wrote in reference to the board taking over Puketi Reserve, over which the board has for some time had a sub-lease from the borough council. The chairman of the board and members of the farm committee were appointed to meet Messrs. Lowe and Skinner on the grounds at the end of the month, with power to act. Owing to the possibility of the visiting South African Athletes being in New Plymouth on February' 10, and the Boys’ High School grounds being engaged for the occasion, the chairman was empowered to postpone the opening date to February 14, instead of February 10, if necessary.
