“NOT BANKRUPT.”
POSITION OF THE FARMERS. NO NEED FOR PESSIMISM. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) “I don’t believe that half the farmers of New Zealand are bankrupt,” said the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives on Thursday, when he was mentioning that gloomy reports had been put into circulation by some people. He had attended a gathering of farmers in his own district recently, and had found the people there to be cheerful. The position might be worse in some other districts, but there was no need for pessimism. The news had been good during the last few days. “I have very important news from England to-day in regard to the meat pool,” added the Prime Minister. “There is no particular secret about it,” he continued in response to questions from members. “It simply amounts to this, that instead of possible obstruction on the other side of the world we are going to get assistance and encouragement from the people in the business.” Mr. Wilford: “From a particular section ?” Ti • Mr. Massev: “Two sections. It is particularly good news. I believe that the new organisation is going to do a deal of good, and I think that will be seen later on.” Mr. Lysnar (Gisborne) remarked that there appeared to be a on the scheme at the present time. The brake would have to be taken off.
