BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

NEW PLYMOUTH BODY. ■ A meeting of the committee of New Ply- ■ mouth Beautifying Society was held on the ! 13th inst. The resignation of the secretary- • ship by Mr. Hounsell, who has left for ■ Auckland, was announced. A hearty vote : of thanks for his services was accorded to : him. Mr. Clarence Edward Pepperell was i appointed secretary, and was authorised ' with the treasurer to sign cheques. In reply to the protest of the society against the proposed opening up of the Mount Egmont National Park for settlement a letter was received from the Minister for lands, stating that the necessity of safeguarding the reserve was fully recognised by the Government. A letter was received from the borough engineer agreeing to a widening of the turnstile, entrance to Baines Terrace and also approving of the president’s suggestion that a pathway from the ridge near the observatory on Marsland Hill leading to Brougham Street be formed. Mr. G. W. Browne and Mr. Robert Davies were elected members of the committee.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed for the following subscriptions: A Sydney lady £2 2s, Messrs. D. McAflum £1 Is, W. C. Nixon £l, Frank Amoore £l, and Boon Bros £l.

The committee made arrangements for carrying out the concert to be held on the 28th inst.
