THE BUTTER MARKET.
GOOD DEMAND AT HOME. “SEEN ITS LOWEST PRICE.” PURCHASE OF THE SURPLUS. By Telegraph.—Treat Assn.—Copyright Received Jan. 13, 10.25 p.m. London, Jan. 12. The Australian Press Association understands the Board of Trade has sold a large quantity of Australian butter and it stocks are now reduced to about 100,000 boxes. The actual price at the sales is not divulged, but is generally believed to be about 10/- above the figures at which the butter was offered to the Australian and New Zealand Governments. It is understood the bulk of the butter was taken by a group largely of TooleyStreet firms acting in conjunction with some of the chief multiple shops and firms, their idea being to secure themselves against any undue advance in retail prices, which would check the present splendid consumptive demand. Their purchase of these Governme t butters make it practically certain that the new season’s butter has seen its lowest price. Present consumption is reckoned to be ten to twenty per cent, above pre-war consumption at this time of the year. At the present retail prices it should be well maintained. It is understood a considerable, portion of the purchases has been shipped to tho Continent. France taking a large quanfl Present quotations of new butters are very firm. .Choicest New Zealand salted ‘is quoted at 130/- and unsahed at 145/-; Australian salted 116/- to 420/ . and unsalted 130/-.' The discharge of both Australian and New Zealand butter is much delayed. The cheese market is steady. New Zealand colored is quoted at 86/- and white at 82/- to 84/-; new Australian colored 82/- to 84/-, white 80/- to 82/-—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
