Archdeacon and Mrs. Reeve, of Wanganui, who have been on a visit to England, were passengers by the s.s. Arawa, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday morning. The Rev. James Ings, of Knox Church, Parnell, has been elected moderator of the Auckland Presbytery for the ensuing six months.
Auckland papers record the deaths of Mrs. Margaret Anne Kilpatrick, one of Auckland’s early residents, aged 85; and of,Mr. Albert L. Garland, of Leamington (Waikato), age 38. News has been received of the death in Napier of Mr. Edward Bramsby Nation, son of the late Colonel Nation, who was for some time connected with the firm of Levin and Co. at Wellington. A London cable announces the death at Algeciras of Mr. Thomas Gibson Bowles, who founded several papers in London, including Vanity Fair. For many years he was a brilliant Parliamentarian and financial expert, but he lost his seat at the 1906 election. He was 76.
Mr. J. Murray has been appointed manager of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, and Mr. John Stevenson retires from the position of manager at Wanganui, but will continue to be associated with the company in a consultative capacity. The new manager of the Wanganui branch is Mr. E. B. Heywood. Mr. R. M. McKnight is taking over the management of the Palmerston North branch, and Mr. A. W. Ward is succeeding Mr. Heywood as manager at Hamilton. Mr. W. A. Collins (chairman), W. H. Swanger (secretary), and E. R. Hodge (architect), of the Wanganui Education Board, intend paying a visit to Taranaki next week to inspect some of the schools in this district. The visitors will be met at Hawera on Tuesday morning by the chairman, secretary, and architect of the Taranaki Board, and after inspecting the local schools, will motor to New Plymouth, via Opunake and the coast road, arriving here the same evening. Wednesday will be spent in New Plymouth, and the visitors will return to Wanganui on Thursday morning.
Two nurses on the staff of the New Plymouth Hospital, Nurse Smith and Nurse Collins, recently’'shared with a Christchurch nurse the honor of being top for New Zealand in the State examinations. Last night the chairman of the board (Mr. M. Fraser) received the following telegram from the Minister in Charge of Hospitals (the Hon. C. J. Parr): “I desire to congratulate your board and the nurses of your hospital on their passing highest in the State examination list.”
