A ROMANCE OF MINING.
GOLD FROM DEEP LEVELS. According to information from Lithgow, a romance of mining is disclosed in the latest crushing of the Deep Levels mine at Hill End, which yielded the excellent return of 2280 z. of gold—worth about £750 —for a little more than a fortnight’s work for twelve men. Six months ago the finances of the company were in anything but a satisfactory condition, and it is probable that the whole concern could have been purchased, if not for the proverbial song, at least for a few hundred pounds. The company made application for a total suspension of operations for six months, in order to effect reconstructions, as it was felt that with development the mine would yield something good. This was not granted, though partial suspension was allowed, which meant that the company must continue. Fortunately it was able to make arrangements to do so, and the development has more than justified the early confidence, particularly as another crushing now in progress is likely to yield equally satisfactory results.
To-day the mine is worth thousands, and it is doubtful if the company could be prevailed upon to sail.
