BANKING RETURNS.
FOR DECEMBER QUARTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 11. The bank returns for the December quarter show that all classes of deposits, and particularly free or current account balances, have fallen away heavily and there is a negligible increase in fixed deposits. Advances are up by over a million as compared with a year ago, but discounts are less by over three-quarters of a million. Following is a sunanary:— Government deposits decreased £2,722,370. Free deposits decreased £8,559,327. Fixed deposits increased £38,053. Advances increased £1,224,469. Discounts decreased £784,038. Circulation decreased £793,954. Coin and bullion increased £26,856. Taking the three classes of deposits the figures compare as under:— Government, 1920, £5,120,001; 1921, £2,397,631; £2,722,370 decrease. Free, 1920, £32,939,759; 1921, £24,380,432; £8,559,327 decrease. Fixed, 1920, £16,517,134; 1921, £16,555,188; £38,053 increase. Total, 1920, £54,576,894; 1921, £43,333,250; £11,243,644 decrease.
