TO LOVE WORK.
TEACH THE CHILDREN This is the title taken by Dr. BarHomes for their annual booklet, a copy of which we have just received from the director, Rear-Admiral Sir Harry Stileman. In his accompanying letter he points out that it is most important in the interests of the nation and Empire that the children should be taught to love work for the work’s sake, for this will go a long way towards the solution of our industrial troubles.
So far as the nation’s destitute children are concerned, he urges the necessity of training them on right lines, lifting them out of the slums ami giving them a good environment and a happy childhood, so that they may take their places as healthy, upright, honorable and God-fearing citizens.
Barnardo’s deal with 26,000 young people every year, and every year they permanently admit some 1400 children. In 56 years they have passed over 92,000 boys and girls through their hands-, and to-day they have a resident family of 7280—the largest family in the world —of whom 1191 are babies and little tots under five.
The Charter of these National Homes is: “No destitute child ever refused admission.” They cater for those who cannot by any possibility help themselves. There is no system of votes and no red tape. The Open Sesame to their care is destitution, and it is of the destitute the Homes achieve such good results. Up to the ever-open door they colne, boys and girls of every size, of every kind, of every stock—dirty, hungry, neglected, verminous; or patched and clean and wet with the tears of parents who would so gladly keep them if they could. And out of the far gate of the Fairy-Castle of Transformation they go, years hence, taught and trained, selfrespecting, self-reliant workers in the great vineyard of God and the Empire. Children are suffering, children arfe perishing, body and soul. Children are crying aloud day by day, hour by hour, for help, and it is in the power of each one of us, in some degree, however small, to lessen the terrible sum of childsufferinsj in this land of ours.
Barnardo’s appeal for help this win-ter-time to save little ones from the suffering into which they are born.
Never before have the Homes needed so urgently the support of those, the world over, who think of the welfare and happiness of little children.
Donations, payable “Dr. Barnardo’s Homes,” may be sent to the Director at 18 to 26, Stepney Causeway, London
