UNHAPPY NEW YORK.

WATER SYSTEM INFECTED. WAVE OF CRIME CONTINUES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 11, 9.15 p.m. New York, Jan. 11.

New York is having its troubles these days. To begin with the water system, which was constructed at a cost of several hundred million dollars, has become infected with a protozoan organism called synura. which gives the water an unpalatable taste similar to that of a ripe cucumber. The Water Board chemists declare themselves at a loss to remedy the matter, and the usual chemical antidotes have been unsuccessful. The water is so unpleasant that people absolutely cannot drink it without boiling. English experts are being consulted.

Secondly, wood alcohol poisoning is recurring. Seven died within two days, and the number since the holidays is nearly forty. Thirdly, hold-ups, robberies, violent assaults and killings continue at the rate o-f five daily. Fourthly, a local group of reformers has introduced into Congress at Washington a Bill for heavily fining newspapers and publishers who attempt to send betting news or tips of any kind to newspapers through the mails. Local publishers are up in arms against the movement, and sent a large body to Washington to oppose the measure.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
