ARAWA’S IMMIGRANTS.
NEARLY 200 FROM ENGLAND. The Shaw-Savill steamer Arawa, which arrived at Wellington from Southampton on Tuesday morning, brought out 195 immigrants for New Zealand —37 men, .111 women, and 47 children. Of these 31 were nominated, 40 are domestic servants who are coming out to positions, and the remainder have been sent to the Dominion under the Imperial overseas settlement 30 The immigrants are of a particularly fine type, and they should do well in thi ß country. They include a number of men who have seen active service, but who owing to the economic conditions prevailing in the Old Country have decided to try their fortune in New Zealand. The labor market at Home at present is anything but bright, and according to the new arrivals there are thousands out of work in England. Large numbers are consistently seeking employment in London without much hope of success, and the same state of affairs obtains in all the big cities in England. The cotton trade in Manchester is anything but bright, but this has had a very depressing effect. There are thousands of unemployed waiting for an opportunity- to leave for the overseas Dominions. The newcomers were eagerly looking forward to reaching their final destination so that they could get settled down and commence work. Five of the new arrivals are for Taranaki.
