THE TRAMWAYS.
The citizens of New Plymouth have ■good cause for satisfaction at the result of the working of the tramways, ■for the year 1921. As an object lesson of how pennies grow into thousands of pounds the year’s receipts are unique. .Out of a system based on 'twopence for the first section and one penny for the ■succeeding sections the tramways earned last year £20,136, an increase of considerably over £6OOO as compared with the previous year. The number of passengers carried was well on the way to two million, so that some idea ■can be obtained of the enormous convenience this method of transport in the borough has proved to residents ■and visitors. It would have been interesting to have ascertained the proportion the expenses bear to the revenue, but that information is not yet available. I Meanwhile the amount collected for fares is certainly satisfactory, an additional source of gratification being that the money is mostly spent in the town, and that whatever profit may be shown helps the borough funds. It is also pleasing to 'know that not only are the trams greatly appreciated by residents, but are spoken of in high terms of praise by visitors. ■They also have played, and are playing a very important part in the development of the town, whose rate of progress in the past five years has been greater than that of any other town with perhaps one exception. A considerable sum of money has been sunk in this enterprise, so that its earning power is a matter of much importance. It is to be hoped that the -time .is not ■far distant when the tramway system •is extended to other parts of the borough. the management deserve congratulation on the results achieved.
