Industrial returns show that 5827 .factories employed 145,241 persons in 1921, arid the aggregate output was valued at £136,992,218. The number of factories increased by 165 in the year. Wages’ Returns show an increase of over four millions. BREAKWATER DAMAGED. Sydney, Jan. 6. Extensive damage was caused to the Port Kembla breakwater as the result of the recent storm. Over 20,000 tons of blue metal boulders were dislodged from the northern walls and washed into the sea. STRIKES IN COAL MINES. Sydney, Jan. 6. Coal owners estimate that the miners in the northern districts lost £465.639 during the year as the result of sectional strikes. The federation has issued a further appeal to the miners urging them not to ballot in favor of a strike as the times are critical. ANOTHER GOLD SHIPMENT. Sydney, Jan. 6. •The Sonoma has sailed with a shipment of 400,000 sovereigns. Extra precautions have been taken against a lecurrence of the previous robbery. NEW SYDNEY PAPER. Sydney, Jan. 6. A new Sydney morning paper, the Daily Mail, has made its appearance. It contains eight pages, price one penny, as against two pence for the other morning papers. It has its own cable service and announces that it is not allied or connected with any party or faction. It is intended to be a paper for the people, published at the price which the people regard as fair and just. BOILER EXPLOSION. Melbourne, Jan. 6. Three men were killed owing to a boiler bursting at the Australian Portland cement works at Fyansford. They were Charles Curtis, George Lidstone, and Alexander Clavarino. The men were having lunch at the time twelve feet in front of the furnace when the explosion occurred and a- stream of steam and ashes shot out.
