Orders for papers may also be left with them CASES OF THEFT. January 4. Pickpockets reaped a good dividend at the Stratford races on both days and a good number of people are bewailing losses other than on the totalisator. It is stated that the thieves were busy during the heavy rainstorm which came on just before the second last race on Monday, when everybody was ei’ .vded into the stands and beneath any available shelter. Losses of £5O, £2B and smaller sums were reported for the first day. On the second day a number of small wins were scored and there is one man who had a narrow escape. He collected about £5O from the totalisator and placed the notes in his wallet. Later he thought that he was taking a risk by carrying his money in the wallet and shifted the notes to another pocket. Two minutes later he found that the wallet had been stolen. A hotel thief also had a good innings at a local hostelry, and inmates of bedrooms reported losses varying from £2O to £3. The last theft reported, and the worst of all,, occurred on the Opunake Road last evening. A lady who was taking a portmanteau to the railway station left it outside a friend’s gate whilst she went inside for a few minutes. On her return the portmanteau was missing. It had been packed with clothes to take on a holiday and the thief in addition to securing a bag full of clothes postponed a family holiday.
