THE ENTEHTE.

DANGER OF FRICTION. CONFLICT OF POLICY. VIEWS OF THE TIMES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, London, Jan. 3. “If there is a danger of the relations between Britain and France through carelessness, neglect, or the obduracy of the British and French Governments leading to a conflict rather than, to the deepening of peace, if they become a check on progress rather than its best inspiration, then it is time we had a new Entente,” says a leader in The Times. Summing up the situation, The Times says—“We must have an Entente and close union of purposes and aims worthy of our common sacrifice during the war for a great purpose beyond ourselves. Such a clear and sincere agreement can only be re-established if the points of difference and divergence are frankly and openly discussed. The profound error of all inter-Allied discussions tor a long time past has been that differences of opinion have not been harmonised. The meetings of the Supreme Council only ended in sham agreements. Dissensions, carefully veiled for decency’s sake from the public eye, have been allowed to grow, fester and rankle, so we are brought to the present, pass with a pronounced and dangerous conflict of policy regarding the Near East and with widely differing conceptions regarding European problems.”
