SOUTHLAND MEETING. INVERCARGILL CUP TO SILENT KING. Invercargill, Jan. 3. The summer meeting of the Southland Racing Club , opened to-day in good weather. A large attendance witnessed good racing. In the principal race, the Invercargill Cup, there was a great finish between the three placed horses, establishing a record for the track. The totalisator investments showed a decline on last year, £26,939 going through compared with £35,827. The gate receipts also showed a drop of £2OO. Results:— AVENUE HURDLES HANDICAP. One mile and a half.—Strathglass (Feildmg) 1, Mandrake 2, Lady Winstone 3. Won by three lengths, third horse eight lengths back. Time. 2min. 54sec. A protest against the winner for interference with Mandrake was dismissed. MAKAREWA TROT. One mile and a half.—Tommy Direct (U. Gardiner) 1, First Toll 2, Eppie Adair 3. Won by two lengths, third horse five lengths back. Time, 3miu. 34sec. FLYING HANDICAP. Six furlongs.— Bon Spec (Ludlow) 2, Silver Peak 3. Won by two lengths, third horse one length' away. Time, Imin. 14sec. NEW YEAR HANDICAP. Six furlongs.—Francaise (McDonald) I, Weird 2, Herbert 3. Won by two lengths and a half, third horse half a length away. Time, Imin. 15 4-ssec. INVERCARGILL CUP HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter.—Silent King (Ludlow) 1, Sunny Loch 2, Songbird 3. Won by half a length, third horse a neck away. Time, 2min. Ssec. ORETI TROT. One mile and a half —College Girl (McLellan) 1, Lady Joffre 2, Peterville 3. Won by halt a neck third horse five lengths back. Time, 3 min. 45see. WAIKIW’I HANDICAP. Seven furlongs.—Roseday (Fisher) 1, Osterman 2, Illume 3. Won by a length, third horse two lengths away. Time, Imin. 29 2-ssec. WAIHOPAI HANDICAP. One mile.— Twinkle 1, Bonnie Winkie 2, Sembric 3, Won by a nose, third horse three lengths back. Time, Imin. 41 sec. A horse that has a future is Skylight (Campfire—Hinerangi). The Inglewood gelding, though pretty raw, got two thirds at the Taranaki meeting, and Ja nded the mustard at Stratford this week, and also ran into another third position there. When in thorough nick Skylight should do something big.
