SYDNEY SAFE ROBBERY.
THIEVES USE GELIGNITE.
The post office at the corner of Shepherd Street and George Street West, Sydney, was entered by thieves one night recently, and £77* in notes was stolen from a strong-room after the door had been blown open by explosives. Enrtance was effected at the rear of the building through a window, which was broken by the theives, who then released the latch.
Gelignite was used to blow open the strong-room door, which is built into, the wall of the outer office. The explosive had been packed into the key-hole, which was stuffed with soap, presumably to make the explosion more intense. A number of mail bags and coats were placed over the door to deaden the
The police consider that the men were experts in safe-breaking by the fact that only just enough explosive was used to break the lock. Four cash boxes were rifled, but the men were evidently disturbed, for several pounds’ worth of silver and copper coins was found in one of the cash boxes, which was lying open.
