BOWLING.
NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. FINAL WON BY A. K. SMART. Yesterday the Taranaki Centre’s New Year tournament was brought to a close, the final being won by A. K. Smart’s rink (Chaney, Grainger, Roberts and Smart), who defeated J. B. Cresswell’s team (McGahey, Dawson, Drake and Cresswell) by 19—18. The fifth round was played in the morning, and the section winners were H. Fookes, A. K. Smart, Cresswell and Woollett. Cresswell and Smart were the winners ; n the semi-final. The play-off provided an interesting finish. Cresswell’s team had scored twelve points before their opponents commenced to score, and led practically all the way till the eighteenth head, when the rinks were level with 18 each. Cresswell then lay three up, but Smart drove and got the head. On replaying Smart scored one, Cresswell’s last ball just missing by a narrow margin.

Section “D”. Billing 13 v. Woollett 12. Brooker 12 v. .G. Jackson 23. Oliver 24 v. Humphries 12. ’ The section winners were: Section “A”: H. Fookes, 4 wins 1 loss. Section “B”: A. K. Smart; 5 wins,, no losses.
Section “C”: Cresswell, Sole and Smith tied, and in the play-off Cresswell beat Sole 9—B and Smith 10—5.
Section “D”: Woollett and Oliver tied with four wins each, and in the play-off Woollett won 10 —3.
SEMI-FINAL West End. Green. Cresswell 22 v. Woollett 14. Smart 31 v. Fookes 20. FINAL. Smart 19 v. Cresswell 18. AUSTRALIAN BOWLING A TEAM FOR ENGLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrigtt. Adelaide, Jan. 3. The eliminating matches in the bowling carnival were favored by .fine weather, and there was interesting play. In the finals there is promise of some keen contests. The Australasian Bowling Council held a meeting, which approved of sending a team to England and arranged details for the next Australasian carnival, which was fixed at Perth at Easter, 1924, instead of 1923 as previously arranged.
