BANKERS’ CLEARING HOUSE. London, Jan. 2. The bankers’ clearing house turnover for 1921 totalled 34,930 millions, a decrease of 4088 millions compared with the record year 1920, but it exceeds any year prior to 1920 and is 6515 millions above 1910. ’• AUSTRALIAN WHEAT CONTROL. London, Jan. 2. Although the operations of the Australian Wheat Committee officially terminated on December 31, the work of finalising the accounts will occupy a considerable time. Grain traders generally express great satisfaction at the way the committee for the past six years has marketed Australian wheat, which has been sold to much greater advantage than by any other wheat-selling countries. The committee last year, during which it sold three million tons,, was greatly assisted by having chartering in its own hands. TIMARU WOOL SALE. AN IMPROVED TONE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Jan. 3. The first sale of the current season in South Canterbury opened to-day. There were 9880 bales offered, the quality being up to the average of recent years. There was a large attendance. Some buyers were understood to be representing Continental firms. The demand showed an improved tone, competition for merino and crossbred being animated. The bulk was secured for colonial mills. Crossbreds constituted the largest class, and the 'advance represented Id to l|d, prices a;ll round being better than at the recent Christchurch sale.
The range of prices was: Merinos 15y 2 d to 18y 2 d, super half-bred 14d to 15y 2 d, first half-breds 12d to 13|d, medium lOd to lid, super three-quarter-bred lOd to liy 3 d, first three-quarter-bred 8d to 9>y g d; medium 6Ad to 7%d, first crossbred did to 7%d, medium to 6£d, coarse 4d to 5Jd, super pieces lOd to 10y 9 d, half-bred bellies, 7 l-4d to B%d; pieces 4d to 5y 2 d; crutchings 3y 2 d to 4Jd.
