EXTREMISTS DEFIANT, GHANDI’S CHALLENGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. Delhi, Dec. 30. The extremists’ conference at Ahmedabad closed amidst scenes of enthusiasm with a spirit of condemnation and defiance of the Government, and a demonstration to obtain complete independence.
The total extremist arrests in Calcutta during the last six weeks is 3500. In Benares 80 are being arrested daily. Despite prohibition and arrests the extremists are enlisting rapidly in proscribed volunteer eorpi. Gandhi has challenged the Government, announcing that he will publish in his paper, Young India, the contents of written copies of the Independent, the suppression of which was previously cabled. —Reuter. London, Dec. 30. Owing to the gravity of the situation in India, and the necessity of trained administrators, the Government asked Lord Lytton to succeed Lord Ronaldshay. Lord Lytton has accepted.
