STRATFORD RACING CLUB. FIRST DAY’S RACING. EGMONT PARK WINS THE CUP. The annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Club opened yesterday, when the weather conditions were somewhat unfavorable. The day began dull, but the weather kept fine, enabling a large crowd to assemble. Just prior to the seventh race a very heavy shower fell, compelling the horses to return to shelter, and as it continued more or less till the conclusion of the meeting, it made matters unpleasant for all, and considerably interfered with the totalisator returns on those two races. Though there had been considerable rain during the past few days the going up till the heavy shower was very fair Racing throughout proved interesting. Fields were good and finishes close. The public going on recent form, had a good day, four of the winners being the public choice.
The Stratford Cup produced a neld of seven and elicited spirited betting. The winner proved to be the Hawera owned horse, Egmont Park, who put in a strong finishing run and took the victory from Admiral Codrington and Pine Arch, who were prominent throughout. The win was a popular one, and Mr. D. J. Goodwin; the owner and trainer, must have felt gratified at the reception. Unfortunately it was marred by an incident that might have caused trouble, Egmont Park’s rider (Conway) allowing his mount to bore over before having obtained the requisite two lengths lead. The stewards held an inquiry and decided to suspend Conway for a month for careless riding. The other open event, the Douglas Handicap, was won by the New Plymouth trained gelding Income. The totalisator was controlled by Mr. Silk, of Wanganui, assisted by Mr. P. Skoglund. of Stratford, and the staff handled £30,942. as compared with £41,259 10s for the first day last year a decrease of £lo3'' 10 s - Mr. H. A. Moore, as starter, despatched his fields in the majority of cases well, whilst Mr. J. R. L. Stanford hoisted/’his decisions promptly. The acceptances and the finishes were a compliment to the chib’s recently appointed handicapper (Mr. W. Russell). Mr. Curry, the stipendiary steward, was present and kept a close watch, but with the exception of the incident in which Conway was suspended, found nothing to complain of. Prior to the meeting all the jockeys were called to. gether. when the presidept (Mr. S. Pitt) briefly addressed them and urged on them the necessity of playing ths game and not taking unnecessary risks by at openings that were not there. He also expressed the hope that all would ride winners. The arrangements for the meeting were good, a tribute to the organising abilitv of the secretary (Mr. A. Cole man)’ who was assisted by a capable staff. The catering was in the hands of the Stratford Marble Bar. under the personal supervision of the manager Mr B. Vinsen). and it was of a high standard. The publican’s booth was controlled by Mr. R. Dunn, of Eltham. musical programme was in the hands of the 4th Battalion Wellington Regimental Band, under the baton of Mr R T, Lowe, and their playing was much appreciated. Detailed results are:
