EGYPTIAN UNREST.

GOVERNMENT CONTROL. FATE OF REBEL LEADER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Cairo, Dec. 28. Lord Allenby has issued a proclamation authorising the Under-Secretaries of Government Departments to exercise the functions of Ministers pending the formation of a new Cabinet. Lordon, Dec. 28. The Daily Mail’s correspondent at Cairo says that it is reported in the Cairo Press that Zaghlul has been placed on a warship at Suez and sent to an unknown destination, but the report is not confirmed. A meeting of Egyptian doctors passed a resolution protesting against the treatment of Zaghlul by the authorities and decided ,to boycott the British and inculcate the population with the idea that the boycott is a sacred national dutv. It was decided to withdraw deposits from the banks and recommend others to do likewise. The military authorities’ have forbidden the banks to pay certain people, including the Zaghlul agitators, their money. The Egyptians were alarmed, and a run on the banks resulted in large sinna being withdrawn. A GRAVE CRISIS. WHAT THE REBELS WANT. FREEDOM OF SPEECH URGED. Received Dec. 30, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 29. A famous and well-known moderate Egyptian Nationalist, interviewed in London, said the gravity of' the situation cannot be exaggerated. The British Government, at a single stroke, wrecked the whole edifice which Lord Cromer and his band of reformers took thirty years to build up. Zaghlul claims only the independence of Egypt, coupled with close alliance with the British Empire. He was arrested for nothing, except an attempt to guide his excited countrymen in a grave crisis by speeches and public discussion. The only remedy is Zaghlul’s immediate release and the grant of freedom to Egyptians to discuss their political affairs freely and openly.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
