CRITICISM OF AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Dec. 29 : Sir J. D. Connolly, Agent-General for Westralia, replying to a letter to the newspapers from Lord Lamington (Governor of Queensland 1895-1901), expressed astonishment at Lord Lamington's sweeping statement, in which he alleges that Australian Government control and interference with private enterprises has produced stagnation, instancing railway extension,, notably in Queensland. Sir J. D. Connolly states that the Government railways are not State business enterprises, but means for promoting settlement and the developing of resources. Speaking officially on behalf of Western Australia, Sir J. D. Connolly challenged Lord Lamington to produce a single instance in support of his allegation that those engaged in private enterprises had -been robbed of the fruits of their labors by legislation.
