Received Dec. 29, 5.5 p.m. London. Dec. 28. A sensation has been caused in racing circles by the refund to forty bookmakers of bets totalling ,t‘3s JU paid out to an army officer, whose father is a successful owner of racehorses. The officer backed the winner of the chief race at Kempton Park on October 8 by means of telegrams lodged at a village post office in the Midlands, apparently a few minutes before the race started, to forty bookmakers in yarious towns. The intelligence department of the Post Office investigated the despatch of these telegrams, and bookmakers have since received a refund of the bets from a relative of the winner.—Aus.-N.Z. FOUL RIDING. A.R.C. STEWARDS ACTIVE. Prior to the meeting of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting on Monday aH jockeys engaged were circulated requiring their attendance at 11 a.m. in the jockeys’ room to meet the stewards. At the appointed time all the stewards entered the room and the jockevs being called to attention, Mr. Fred Earl, KjC., as chairman of the stewards, proceeded to address them. The subject of his address was the matter of foul riding and interference to which attention has been called by sporting

writers throughout the Dominion. Mr. Earl referred to the interview given to a Wellington Pressman by a prominent jockey lately returned from England, in which that jockey had stated that riding on English courses was very clean and fair, and he asked whether that could be conscientiously said of the riding in New Zealand. He had grave doubts about it. He referred to the Press comment upon this subject, and said he feared it was entirely justified.

The Auckland stewards had, he said, given the matter their anxious consideration, and had concluded tfyat the racing at Ellerslie may not have been buificiently supervised and that the penalties hitherto inflicted for offences of this kind had been inadequate. By way of remedy they proposed to materially increase the supervision by stationing members of their body at certain vantage points, thereby assisting the stipendiary steward who, for various reasons, was compelled to view the racing from the stewards’ stand.

Further, it was intended, seeing that light penalties had not a deterrent effect, to materially increase the penalties in all well-proved cases. He made an earnest appeal to the older jockeys Ho co-operate with the stewards in their efforts to put down the evil complained of and to set an example to the younger ones. He appealed to them all to play the game, give their competitors a fair chance and be sportsmen. He reminded them of the dangers of their calling in these days of big fields, where a breach of the riding rules might lead to a tragedy. These rules, he said, were devised by men of racing wisdom for the purpose of ensuring fair play to all and for the further purpose of safeguarding the lives of the riders. Mr. Earl concluded his short but forceful address, which was attentively listened to by the jockeys and loudly applauded by them at the close, by expressing the hope that they would alt ride winners at the meeting and wishing them a happy New Year.. SILVER LINK. Says a northern writer: By winning the A.R.C. Railway Handicap under 9.0 from a high-class field. Silver Link must be accounted to have furnished pointed evidence that she is quite the Silver Link of old, which is, of course, to be interpreted in th| sense that she is still great over a sprint course. The, daughter of Achilles had run unplaced in her five previous efforts this season prior to contesting the Railway Handicap; but having trained on splendidly of late she commanded a solid body of admirers for the Ellferslie race. Up to the present Silver Link has contested 54 races, and her record reads as follows:

Up to date Silver Link's earnings in stakes amount to £lO,OlO. Not a bad return truly lor the SOgns. which the Taranaki sportsman, Mr. A. Alexander, paid for the bay daughter of Achilles and Secret Link when she was offered by auction as a yearling at Alexandra Park on December 30, 1916.

A well-known Auckland owner, who, by the way, won a race at Takapunft, in which his investment on his horse was the smallest he had ever entrusted it with, got into the crowd coming from the races, and from the remarks he heard, is not quite sure whether he is a double-dyed villain, a big punter, a briber of the judge-, a patron of the double-layers, or a mug. His experience was very amusing, and gave him a good idea of "the value of the criticism of a race crowd on sport generally, and 'the honor of owners in particular. A circular issued by Tattersail’s in Tasmania shows that payments in taxation on its turnover of £1,047,500 in sweeps for the year ending June 30 were as follows:—Tasmanian stamp duty, £69,833 6s Sdf; Tasmanian tax on prizes, £94.275; a total of £164.108 6s Bd. The Commonwealth tax on prizes amounted to £116..154. making a grand total of £280,262 6s Bd. A Tattersail’s sweep of 100,000 tickets at 5s contributed in taxation £1.666 13s 4<l. as Tasmanian stamp duty, £2250 as Tasmanian tax on prizes, and £2835 as Federal tax. a total of £6751 13s 4d. Tasmania has reason to be pleased that Tattersail found refuge there, and at the same time it is humorous that while the sweeps are regarded as illegal bv the Commonwealth Government, and postal or telegraphic communication with Tattersail is barred, it should derive over £116,000 in one year-from that source.
